CGSociety posted a short making of aticle that was done by master Artist Patrick Beaulieu. He takes us on his creature creation tour for the Strange Behavior CGChallenge and EXPOSÉ 6’s ‘Fear of the Dark’. He used 3ds Max, Photoshop, Mental ray, Mudbox and Hair FX to create a unique character.

While I was working on an animation project, I was struggling a little bit on how to get a localized effect on getting cloth simulation to work on a character. So, I took a small hiatus on my own character and opened and old scene to test my theory on a way to control my cloth. A lot of artists like me having tried many different ways to get cloth simulation working and have struggled constantly.

by Christopher Tackett At the start of this project I wasn’t sure if I wanted to render it in Lightwave or Zbrush. I probably could have created a slightly better rendering with Lightwave since it would have more accurate shadows. But during some early Zbrush test renderings of the scene I felt I was getting great results from the Zbrush rendering engine.

by Florence Design Academy Glowing materials are very useful to create light effects. For example a neon-light effect. This kind of material is a light-emitting material. It will create light and shadows like an Omni Light. (For this material you must use Mental Ray).

My main goal was to recreate the already existing environment in 3d as accurately as possible to achieve a high degree of realism, just like in the movie production.
